Books have been stated on this matter, and the controversy and interchanges about where the "hot" slot machines are placed in the casino are still ongoing – over sixty yrs after slot games were first installed in gambling houses.

The classic rule is that the better slot machine games were placed just inside the entrance of the casino; so that fun seekers walking by would see real jackpot winners … be smitten to come into the casino and play. Our conclusion is that this is definitely no longer so.

Most of the big name casinos these days are herculean complexes and it’s no longer possible to see inside from the sidewalk, so there is no longer a reason to put the ‘loose’ slot machine games near to any entrances.

An additional standard rule is that loose one armed bandits are positioned on the major aisles in the casinos, again so that more folks could see winning jackpots and be inspired to play. Nonetheless, we find that this also isn’t a universal rule any more.

What casinos found over the years is that people walking down the busy aisles were frequently on the way to somewhere else. If they played slot machine games at all, they would simply put in their loose change because they happened to be walking by. Win or lose, they would very often not stop to keep playing. And the very last thing a casino wants is for someone to win a jackpot by playing only a few coins and then not stay to put it all back in!

These days, casinos are constantly changing their philosophy about where to place the loose one armed bandits.

The quintessential rule is that the better slot machines were located just inside the main door of the casino; so that folks going by would be able to see real jackpot winners and be attracted to come inside and play. Our frame of mind is that this is no longer the case.

The great majority of the large casinos nowadays are mammoth complexes … you no longer can see inside from the sidewalk, so there’s no longer a reason to position the ‘loose’ slot machine games in close proximity to any entrances.
